Maramures, Bucovina and the Székely Land

Romania – authentic and unforgettable

If you haven’t decided yet where to spend your holiday, we strongly recommend Romania as a travel destination. Experience with us beautiful places in Transylvania, visiting the Moldavian monasteries and spend a day in Viseu de Sus and enjoy a unique ride with the steam train – including also a Dinner by the campfire. You will be impressed during the whole trip by the breathtaking nature!

Day 1: Arrival in Cluj-Napoca

City tour
Our journey begins in Cluj-Napoca, the second largest city in Romania. Cluj is a very old city, which was administrative and military center, but also the capital of Transylvania. We will take a city tour while visiting the following attractions: Piata Unirii, the birthplace of the Hungarian king Matei Corvin, the Gothic St. Michael’s Church, but also the Franciscan church and the baroque Piarist church. We will spend the night in Cluj.

Day 2: Cluj – Surdesti- Plopis – Baia Mare

From Cluj we continue our journey to Baia Mare. On the way we will visit two wooden churches. The first is the Church in Surdesti, which was built in 1766 and has a total height of 54 m, whereby the Church is one of Europe and the world’s tallest wooden sacral buildings. The second wooden church is located in Plopis and impresses by its size. Both churches are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We will spend the night in Baia Mare.

Day 3: Baia Mare – Sapanta – Rozavlea – Viseu de Sus

We will spend this day in Maramures and discover the main attractions of the region. The small community of Sapanta is known for its “merry cemetery” (Cimitirul Vesel) and is a must visit on a trip in Maramures. Why is this cemetery called so and what makes it so special you will discover there. In Rozavlea we can find a unique wooden church, which dates from the year 1717th. The environment and the nature of the Church give their specific charm. Viseu de Sus is our last destination for today.

Day 4: A day trip with the steam train

A day trip with the steam train and outdoor dinner with campfire.

Today we will spend the whole day in Viseu de Sus and a ride with the steam train – an absolute must for those who are nearby. The ride with this steam train is one of the last such railway adventure in Europe. In the evening we will relax at the campfire and enjoy a quiet dinner in the nature.

Day 5: Viseu de Sus – Moldovita – Sucevita – Radauti

From Viseu de Sus we continue to Moldovita and Sucevita, two important monasteries in Moldavia. The wooded valleys that surround Moldovita and the frescoes on the exterior walls make the monastery a unique destination. Sucevita is located in the historic area of Bucovina, in the north of Moldova, and contains both Gothic and Byzantine elements. It is a masterpiece when it comes to painting. The final destination for today is Radauti where we will also spend the night.

Day 6: Radauti – Cetatea Neamt – Lacul Bicaz – Lacul Rosu - Hanul Moara

Dinner at the mill included Szekler music
We will make the first stop for today in Cetatea Neamt. The castle was built in the 14th century and leads your visitors into the period of the early middle Ages back. Lacul Bicaz / Bicaz Lake is the largest reservoir in Romania and offers a magnificent view over the Ceahlau massif. Lacul Rosu / The Red Lake was created in 1838 by a landslide dammed a river. The view of the lake and the nature is stunning. We end the day with a pleasant dinner in a mill in the rhythm of the Szekler music.

Day 7: Hanul Moara - Touring a cold geyser - cheese tasting - Fotomuseum at the Kovacs family in Odorheiul Secuiesc - Tinovul Fanata Brazilor - Sovata

Today starts with a visit to a cold geyser and a cheese tasting. In Odorheiul Secuiesc, family Kovacs opens the door to their Photo museum. Here takes place an explanation on the old methods of developing photos. Family Kovacs has a large collection (80,000 pieces) of glass negatives. A unique memory may be a group photo that will be done with the old equipment and we will get framed. A few kilometers from Corund away is Tinovul Fanata Brazilor, a natural setting on a former volcano, similar to the tundra – a thoroughly interesting experience. We will spend the night in Sovata.

Day 8: Sovata – Sighisoara - Cluj airport

After the pleasant breakfast in Sovata we will drive to Sighisoara. We will visit the Citadel, with the narrow streets and colorful houses and then it goes further to Cluj for the home flight.
