The Apuseni Mountains hold the densest concentration of caves in Romania — over 3,000 registered cavities, including the largest ice cave in Europe and some of the most spectacular stalactite systems on the continent. This tour combines underground exploration with surface hiking through dramatic limestone gorges and traditional Motzi villages.
Arrival in Cluj-Napoca, the cultural capital of Transylvania. Welcome dinner and briefing. Transfer to guesthouse in the Apuseni foothills.
A full day hiking through the Turda Gorge (Cheile Turzii) — a 3km limestone canyon with 300m walls. One of the most dramatic short hikes in Romania, with fixed ropes on the steeper sections. Swim in the river at the exit.
Visit to Scărișoara — home to Europe's largest underground glacier, with an ice block over 3,500 years old. Afternoon hike on the Apuseni plateau through meadows and traditional Motzi farms. Overnight in Gârda de Sus.
Morning at Focul Viu cave — a luminous cavern where light enters from a natural skylight to illuminate a subterranean ice floor. Afternoon hike across the Vârtop plateau, one of the highest karst plateaux in Romania. Overnight in Stâna de Vale.
Visit to the Bear Cave (Peștera Urșilor) — named for the fossil cave bear bones discovered inside — with dramatic stalactite galleries. Afternoon walk along the Crișul Negru river valley. Farewell dinner.
Transfer to Cluj-Napoca airport or onward transport. End of programme.
